Capoeira New York
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art,
accompanied by rhythm and song. It
was developed by African slaves in
Brazil to increase their chances for liberty
and independence. On the pretence of dance
they practiced fighting techniques...
Capoeira has harmony of forces that
gives you strength, flexibility, endurance, and
self-discovery. Capoeira balances the body,
soul, and mind. The art keeps its strong
traditions and enables you to break through
limits, revitalizing you for everyday life.
Capoeira builds your self-confidence, and the
challenge is within anyone's reach regardless
of age, race, gender or athletic experience.
The energy for the game, the rhythm and speed
are determined by music and songs. The
berimbau, a single steel stringed bow,
is the lead instrument. The music is being
completed by clapping, singing, pandeiro
(tambourine) and atabaque(oblong drum).
